Continuing prayer for Japan

Originally appeared on spirituality.com

On March 11, on television, I watched the news of disaster in Tohoku, Japan. I didn’t know about it until that night. I felt defeated thinking if I had known much earlier, I could have helped by immediately praying—affirming that God does not bring death and devastation.

And then I thought in order to help rebuild and support this situation, I shouldn’t dwell on “should have” or “could have” but turn my eyes away from the scenes of disaster and pray with exactly the opposite, the reality of divine harmony.

Mary Baker Eddy says in her Miscellaneous Writings 1883-1896, “Is a stone spiritual? To erring material sense, No! but to unerring spiritual sense, it is a small manifestation of Mind, a type of spiritual substance . . .” (p. 27). And in Science and Health, she writes, “The divine Mind maintains all identities, from a blade of grass to a star, as distinct and eternal” (p. 70).
