Wide open to God's guidance

Several years ago, I was asked to join the board of a nonprofit organization in my community—and at the first meeting, I was elected president of the board. I was enthusiastic and threw myself into the job with gusto. I’d had many conversations with the staff up to that point, and I felt I had some expertise and experience that would be valuable to the organization.

Right away, however, there were signs of trouble. I was made aware of some financial and personnel difficulties facing the organization. Nevertheless, I felt confident in my abilities to help raise funds and to work with the remaining board members.

Over the following two years, we held fundraisers and two retreats, organized a float for the Fourth of July Parade, created an advisory board composed of influential community members, and expanded the donor base—among many other activities. The work was full time for me. Throughout this time, however, I was aware of issues such as a lack of funds and a lack of involvement by the community.
