My will – or God's?

Originally appeared on spirituality.com

One sunny warm day, while I was waiting in the car for my mother, I saw a fly breeze in and promptly fly to the back window. What a surprise for the fly when it discovered that something it couldn’t even see kept it from going right back out into the sunny day! Even though all of the car windows were down, the fly insisted on trying to escape through that back window.

My Mother still hadn’t returned, so I was now becoming very interested in the saga of the fly. What would it choose to do in its predicament? I chuckled to myself as I imagined what the fly might be thinking: “I just want to go back out into the fresh air and fly with the wind. I can even see where I want to go, and so this must be the way to get there. I will continue to try to get my freedom out this back window!”

Well, the fly certainly did belong back out in the air. But it didn’t know that the back window could not be opened! The fly could have found four other windows that were wide open and would allow for its immediate freedom! But the fly remained in bondage by not turning away from that back window.
