A resurrection morning
Originally appeared on spirituality.com
On the wall of my office I have a print of a painting by French artist, Eugene Burnand that deeply inspires me. Titled “Les Disciples,” it depicts the two disciples, Peter and John, hurrying to Jesus’ sepulcher after hearing the thrilling news of his resurrection. Their expressions are powerful. Both men are intensely focused on their destination, and the deep spiritual significance of the occasion.
John, walking a bit ahead of Peter, is dressed in white, symbolizing the purity of his faith. His earnest trust in Christ Jesus’ promise of resurrection is apparent and he looks ahead with expectancy in the early morning light. Peter presses close behind, yearning to have any remaining doubts and fears refuted by evidence of the risen Christ. With their hair blowing back, their robes flowing behind them, and their faces resolute with purpose, one could say these are men on a mission!
In her book, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy made clear just how life-changing the resurrection was to the disciples: “His resurrection was also their resurrection. It helped them to raise themselves and others from spiritual dulness and blind belief in God into the perception of infinite possibilities.”
