Stranded in Africa

Originally appeared on spirituality.com

The four-passenger plane landed. We scrambled off with our luggage, excited for our safari, and watched the plane take off again. But not a soul was in sight. No one was there to meet us as we’d expected. There were no buildings, no fences, no telephone. Only a short macadam landing strip and a flag pole. We were stranded on an air strip in equatorial Kenya. What were we going to do?

My husband and I looked at each other with a look that said, surely someone would come and pick us up soon. No one did.

An hour passed. We grew anxious. The possibility of lions or other wild animals lurking in the nearby bush crossed our minds, and I began to wonder what would happen to us if no one ever came? We hiked about a half mile up to the highway and tried to flag down a truck or bus. But they were overflowing with passengers and none stopped. We decided the best thing to do was to return to the air strip and wait right where the plane dropped us off.
