China—in the arms of Love

Originally appeared on spirituality.com

The latest news reports that thousands of people have been killed or injured in the worst earthquake to hit China in 30 years. Those casualties include children in schools that have collapsed. Measuring 7.8 on the Richter Scale, the quake caused widespread damage to the southwestern province of Sichuan and was felt as far away as Bangkok, Thailand—more than 1,200 miles from the epicenter.

China’s Premier, Wen Jiabao, flew immediately to Sichuan. “Facing disaster,” he said, “the most important thing is calm, confidence, courage, and strong leadership.... We will definitely overcome this major disaster” (The London Times, May 12, 2008).

Wen's confidence is heartening, and a powerful message to those striving to help those in trouble. Our prayers can back up that confidence and support all those who are affected—including their helpers—through our understanding that even now God is present with all of them.
