Stand firm in the face of sickness

Originally appeared on spirituality.com

A few months back, I had case of cough and cold severe enough that I lost my voice. I rely on Christian Science for healing, and by communing with God in prayer, I was able to regain my voice. Still the cold lingered, and my husband who was worried about the spread of bird flu, became concerned that I might be suffering from this condition.

At times, I was almost more bothered by his anxiety than by the physical condition. Finally, I called my sister in Texas to ask her to pray for me, as we both rely on prayer for healing.

After an hour she called back and recommended that I really ponder this statement by Mary Baker Eddy: “When the illusion of sickness or sin tempts you, cling steadfastly to God and His idea. Allow nothing but His likeness to abide in your thought. Let neither fear nor doubt overshadow your clear sense and calm trust, that the recognition of life harmonious—as Life eternally is—can destroy any painful sense of, or belief in, that which Life is not. Let Christian Science, instead of corporeal sense, support your understanding of being, and this understanding will supplant error with Truth, replace mortality with immortality, and silence discord with harmony.”
