Intelligent parenting

Recently I was having dinner with friends and the topic of raising children came up. While the tone was light and amusing, several people mentioned times when they’d been unsure how to respond when their children had acted in unexpected ways.

If talk shows and television programs such as Supernanny are any indication, my friends aren’t the only ones who are grappling with the demands of raising young children in today’s world. Feeling inadequate or unprepared seems pretty common.

But a combination of prayer—moments of deep communion with God—and life experience has convinced me that there never needs to be a moment when we are truly without guidance. In fact, I’m learning that we can actually parent with confidence and grace. But the key to this confidence is an ever-growing reliance on God.
