Spiritual maturity and the news

Originally appeared on spirituality.com

For years I had a superficial interest in current events and the news. When I did pick up the newspaper, I’d be more curious about the weather in my small corner of the world than about the quality of others’ lives in conflicted, war-torn, or impoverished countries. Several factors actually seemed to argue against being well-informed.

First of all, I found news reports challenging to understand. It was difficult for me to keep the names of different political factions straight—let alone their motives and ideologies. Ditto for the names of political leaders.

I didn’t find current events very interesting, either. But the real problem behind my confusion and apathy was a feeling of helplessness. I didn’t see how understanding the news could have an impact on what was going on in politics and government.
