The fragrance of Christmas

Originally appeared on spirituality.com

The spicy aroma of cookies baking in the kitchen, the woodsy scent of the newly arrived Christmas tree in the living room—delightful as these are, it is gratitude for the Christly love in our hearts that is the true fragrance of Christmas.

Several years ago I made a new friend who was always looking on the darker side of things. We really clicked in other ways, but I found her complaints disturbing. As the Christmas season approached, I could just imagine her complaining about the commercialization of the holiday and its lack of real significance.

To my surprise she loved Christmas. “The spirit of Christ is nearer,” she said. “People talk more about Christ Jesus and you can feel love in the stores and wherever you go.” She was right, of course, and as we yield to this pervasive love, the extra work and the irritants that may accompany this season often disappear. We can honestly say that we love Christmas in all its holiday wrappings.
