Easter's beautiful promise fulfilled

Originally appeared on spirituality.com

At Easter each year, people’s thoughts turn to Jesus’ experiences before and after his crucifixion. Jesus overcame so much! For many, these are simultaneously the saddest and the most encouraging events related in the Bible. All Jesus had done during his life was bring healing and goodness to people. Yet at this crucial time, his disciples abandoned him, and he was left alone to confront some of the most significant threats one could imagine: not only an attempt on his life, but an attempt to destroy everything he had taught his followers.

The beauty of it all, of course, is that he really wasn’t abandoned or alone. Jesus could face and overcome death because divine Spirit was the only force, the only power, operating, no matter what anyone believed at that time. “The central fact of the Bible is the superiority of spiritual over physical power,” observed Mary Baker Eddy, the author of the well-known book, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures.

Easter is a time to celebrate the fact that there exists this singular, spiritual power—the omnipotence of God—that can be seen to govern every aspect of man’s being with precision and harmony. God’s universe, including man, is spiritual and is governed by invariable divine law.
