A friend of mine had just returned home after traveling to Japan and Australia and phoned to invite me over to see her new flat the following Saturday. I was delighted to hear from her, as it had been over a year since we had spoken.
To accept her invitation sounded like a good idea, but I wasn’t thrilled about the neighborhood I’d need to go through to get there. My friend lives on the other side of town, and I would have to change trains at a station where street gangs tend to congregate. “We’ll see,” I said, as I quickly tried to change the subject.
