Travel tips

I’ve traveled a lot, and loved it. My wife and I traveled around the world during the ten years I served as a Christian Science lecturer. We went to all 50 states, including Hawaii and Alaska, as well as a good part of Canada (east and west), two long tours of Europe and of South Africa; and shorter tours of Australia, New Zealand, and Japan.

I learned to pack well, but light. And to make sure I would take time to see all the beauty and charm wherever we happened to be. Of course there were times when we traveled to troubled areas, and, like anyone, we had to be wise and use common sense in those places. But as we kept praying, we had no problems with safety. And that’s the key to all of this really, the prayer we relied on more than anything else.

The key idea that we prayed with as we traveled was to see ourselves and everyone else as God’s perfect, spiritual creation. And because this is what’s actually true, we affirmed that only good could come into our traveling experiences. God, divine Mind, is in full control and reigns supreme. Mary Baker Eddy wrote in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures: “All that really exists is the divine Mind and its idea, and in this Mind the entire being is found harmonious and eternal. The straight and narrow way is to see and acknowledge this fact, yield to this power, and follow the leadings of truth.”
