I wanted that furniture—but did we need it?

About four years ago, I decided our brand-new house needed a brand-new dining-room set: table, chairs, and a beautiful buffet cabinet. I was sure that this addition to our décor would delight any dinner guests we had, and even make the food we served taste better. But my husband was not on the same page. He made it very clear that new furniture was the last thing we needed, as building the house had run over budget.

But I wanted it!

So, when I saw a large sale banner outside the most elegant furniture store in town, I decided to take a peek. One hour later, I was the proud owner of a stunning new dining-room suite. I was also $9,000 deeper in credit-card debt.
