Three purple crocuses

Originally appeared on spirituality.com

I'm walking around the neighborhood trying to clear my head.
Winter has taken its toll on me, I'd rather be curled up in bed.
I’m not seeing the promise of springtime—
The blessings of a bright fresh start.
Loneliness, boredom, frustration and doubt
tug on the strings of my heart.

I ask God to help me be grateful, to discover something new,
Some sign of life, or confirmation of the things I believe are true.
My intellect, it sometimes seems, would have the upper hand
And trick me into ignoring blessings that are constantly at hand.

But as I look back toward my apartment, preparing to turn around,
I see three purple crocuses growing out of the ground.
Surrounded by stern shades of gray, they don't seem to mind.
They must sense that spring is coming, and are enjoying this growing time.

They shine with rich color and bow in the wind,
They bask in the afternoon light.
They stand with humility, grow fearless and free
And greet passersby with delight.

Hope. Light. Grace. Is that what they represent?
I guess it depends on what we need to see—
A divine message has been sent.
