Team spirit rises on the wings of gratitude

Just as my daughter's softball game was about to begin, the team's coach asked me run the concession stand. The request left me speechless—if I went to the stand, I'd miss the entire game. Why me?

But as a dedicated parent, I felt obligated to help, so I didn’t say anything. In a huff, I headed off to the concession stand. In the first 15 minutes, one person bought a single piece of bubblegum. I almost blew my stack. I thought, I should be in the stands right now, cheering for the team with the other parents.

But as I fumed and vented to myself, another thought popped into my head: What are you grateful for? I saw this as a nudge from God—I wasn’t exactly thinking about my predicament spiritually.
