A humble prayer trims pride at the gym

Originally appeared on spirituality.com

I joined a gym that opened close to my home. This was a great way for me to stay active and still have my two-and-a-half year old son Christopher in tow. He hung out in the children’s area while Mommy got in shape.

I sailed through the first few weeks—until Christopher started disturbing the peace in the childcare room. Apparently he’d resorted to climbing and dancing on the gym equipment. One day he topped off his performance by spilling pretzels all over the carpet.

At my next visit, the gym’s owner said several people had complained about my son. “Could you schedule your visits during non-peak times?” she asked, kindly. I smiled and assured her I would, but as I walked home, I felt a growing resentment.
