Church—a place for growing, a place for loving

Before I packed up and moved to my new home—more than 2,000 miles away—members of my branch Church of Christ, Scientist, organized a terrific going-away lunch. There was great food and some really nice gifts. But the best gift of all, I think, was the love I had experienced through my membership in this church.

I have studied Christian Science for more than three decades, but I was a closet Christian Scientist for about 21 years. Those weren’t the happiest years of my life by a long stretch. But they were surely a time of growing. Little seeds of faith were germinating as I began to study the Bible and to seriously consider Mary Baker Eddy’s ideas about good and evil.

Then, in the mid-1990s, one of my young-adult children called me, very upset because medical tests showed she had a potentially devastating physical problem. After speaking with her, I immediately called a Christian Science practitioner to pray with me.
