God-given dominion over stress

Originally appeared on spirituality.com

My husband and I, and our young son, were a very busy family. Too busy. My husband and I were both working to pay for what we thought would be the perfect house, but was really too big for the three of us. In fact, because of all the demands on us, we actually spent little time together in our home.

My job was very stressful and I was on call 24/7. I wasn’t enjoying my work, but there seemed to be few options. Praying about employment and purpose, I found this in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy: “Man is not made to till the soil. His birthright is dominion, not subjection” (517:31-2). This made me think of the account of creation in the first chapter of Genesis, where God gives man dominion.

Sometimes people think of “dominion” as meaning the right to have authority over others, but spiritual dominion is different. It’s actually about knowing that human circumstances can’t take away our joy, because God didn’t create us as burdened mortals.
