ILLUMINATION

Night covered me.

REASSURANCE

God's thought is not our thought, His infinite careDeviseth ways and means beyond our ken,And all unseen by our blind selves, as when—In spite of seeming darkness here or there—A waiting glory showeth us how fairHis slightest promise is; how groping menMay know His tender love, or now or then,And in this love find rest beyond compare.

ATTAINMENT

No longer strive thyself to run in moldPreparéd for another man; nor makeA model for thyself; but gladly takeThe matchless form that man has borne of oldWhen morning stars with song did dawn enfold,And sons of God with shouts of joy did breakThe silence of the spheres and echoes wakeThat through the æons ring in dale and wold.

THE VOICE OF TRUTH

As, looking overhead, sometimes we seeTwo galaxies of clouds, not keeping companyBut going diverse ways;As listening to music, played in many partsClear to the listening ear and gentle hearts,Beneath and quite apart, no other sound can drownA low, sweet, tender monotone:So, when Love friends together brings,To outward ear discussing many things,But still their hearts unite in universal love,Finding its tranquil in God above,Be silent thou, and bend a listening ear!Apart from mortal sense, a song of peace thou'lt hear,God's undercurrent in the mental air.

THE EMPTY TOMB

Why weepest thou?

THE CHOICE

I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life.

LOST AND FOUND

I saw that in order to find my life, I had to first lose it—that is, lose all sense of life as material.

SERVICE

How may I best attain the high idealOf Christly service, of true helpfulness,That daily, hourly, as the way I follow,I may each needy brother cheer and bless?

"A NEW SONG."

The weary snow and slush lay on the road,The winter sun smiled wanly all in vain,It could not lift the bitter dragging loadThat lay upon my heart with numbing pain.

COMFORT ME

Comfort me, Lord, that I may beSome comfort to another; That on his darkness I may shedLight for a stumbling brother.

"THE DARKNESS IS PAST."

O icy wind, from snow-clad mountains blowing,From summits where the winter still holds sway,In the chill freedom of your ebb and flowingIs felt no promise of the coming May.

TRUE PEACE

One day when all went wrong, I humbly cried:Why do I feel this nameless blame, dear Lord,—Must I still conquer hate, or fear, or pride?

THE BLESSINGS OF TODAY

The fields of corn are peaceful 'neath the burning August sun;The languid rivers placid as their gentle course they run;The loitering bees, the swallows drifting through the drowsy air,Give not a hint of browning leaves nor winter's crystal glare!
