PATIENCE

Child , maintain thy full assuranceOf the pulsing power within;Look not on forbidden objects,Since to look thus is to sin.

THE DWELLING-PLACE OF THOUGHT

Large and round the golden moonMoves a lake of clouds aboon,And the clouds like waves of laceDrift against the planet's face,While a lone star shining nighGems a rift of azure sky.

A THOUGHT OF LIFE

Amid the scenes of that which we call death,The stronger thought of Life and Truth and Love,If held through all the clamor and the rushOf speechless anguish, loss, and sense of pain,Will keep the heart untroubled, undismayed.

BE MINE

O Love, be mine this day!And I shall sing—Like joyous lark speeding on upward wingTo rise above earth's gloom and o'er it ring—Love's roundelay.

ANSWER

O Love, who didst the want supplyOf Hagar's famished son,And in the burning wildernessDidst make the streams to run,In this, the desert of my life,Again Thy will be done!

LOYALTY

Father, I look to Thee for all I need,From these, my brethren, whom I aid todayI would exact no homage.

"JOHN YOUNG OF EDINBURGH"*

IT was well said, John Young, And history hath approved thy sturdy tongue.

INFINITY

"Nor height nor depth.

SHEPHERDED

FEAR not ; though dark thy pathway lies, Behind the clouds are azure skies; And angels watch, and guide thy feet By waters still, through meadows sweet; For, lo, the Shepherd guards His sheep, And doth not slumber, neither sleep.
Not for tomorrow does the promise read, But grace today to fill each present need; Each day to feel Love's all-sustaining power; Each day to know that Life is man's great dower; Each day to grow still more to understand That all things good and true are from His hand; And, trusting daily in His tender care, To climb the hilltops and find angels there.

THE HOUSE OF LIFE

O Love! O Love divine! didst ThouIn very truth draw near?
Out of th' abysmal past,Up from the Stygian darkness drawn,Into the light at last—gate unbarred—escapes the dawn.
