THE FALSE AND THE REAL

I Thought I loved — but when the sun was shiningI caught the shadows only, on the grass.

"REVELATION."

A heav'nly  yearning rises in my heartTo pierce beyond the shifting veil of sense,To see all Thou beholdest, all Thou art,To know what underlies this frail pretense.

CONFIDENCE

Night found me in a pathless way and drear,Halting before the temper of the hail;I looked to train my steps, but groped in fear;I prayed with hapless patience to availOne favor of the beam-bestowing moon.

PROTECTION AT NIGHT

We cannot be alone, for thou art near! What though the midnight shadows close us round,And terror seems to lurk in sight and sound:Still are we safe, since thou, O Christ, art here!

PRAYER

If I in pride and arrogancePresume to judge God's ways,And seek to better them perchance,The while my lips may praise;

SEPTEMBER DAY

My heart is thine, fade not away, O beautiful September day! Thy calm is mine—Love's message clear Comes gently to my list'ning ear; It heals all grief and soothes all fear.

PILGRIM, PRESS ON

PILGRIM, press on: the path seems dark, And stones of mortal sense have cut our feet, But gentle breezes waft a perfume sweet, And, lo, I hear the singing of a lark!
So stood of old the holy ChristAmidst the suffering throng; With whom his lightest touch sufficedTo make the weakest strong.

TRUTH'S CALL

Through long, long years I stumbled, deaf and blindTo all the truths thou camest to unfold:Poor, blind, and self-imprisoned; with vain criesAnd eyes perverse, looking afar to findBlessings that groping hands, by taking hold,Might more than overflowing fulness know.

'TIS SUMMER

'Tis summer, and the fragrant airWafts incense of the flowers:'Tis summer, and the tuneful worldAllures to woodland bowers:'Tis summer, and my heart is gladThat winter lost his reign:'Tis summer, and my sense is freeFrom every mortal pain:'Tis summer in my joyful heartFor I have found the "better part.

THE GREAT PARENTAGE

As flowers growing each on separate stalk,Yet springing from a common soil, so weRoot deep in God, tho' near our lives may walkThe jealous years.
