The Advent of Love

Softer than flight of tawny owl in the tender dim of June, More dear to the heart than the curlew's cry, or the rushing river's tune,Brighter than ray of rising sun on the dew-bathed heathery ben Falls the first touch of infinite Love on the weary hearts of men.

Progress

AT first, as through a darkened glassWe see vague shapes and shadows pass;We see Truth's brilliant beam of lightAs but a candle in the night; For we can only dimly seeThe glory of God's sovereignty.

Deliverance

At midnight, grimly guarded, Paul and SilasIn the inner prison lay,Held in the stocks, their flesh torn by the lash,For witnessing to Truth; and yet,Disdaining all material evidence that seemed to boastOf wrong triumphant, joyously they sangPraises to God on high, and prayed,And sang again.

Awakening

'TIS spring! and all the world awakes With mellow song and tender green; But more than ever now I gaze On things not seen.

Assurance

His arm around you, well beloved—The Father's strong and shielding arm; What evil thing can find you there,What menace do you any harm?
WHEN all the world is glorious with spring,When rosy blossoms shine against the blue,And joyous birds in every thicket sing,Stirring the heart to gratitude anew; When snow-clad mountains, far across the bay,Lift their proud crests against the setting sun,Pointing to heights beyond our little day,Promising glories that shall yet be won; Then consciousness of Spirit grows aware,Dimly perceives what eye hath never seen,The truth that underlies these symbols fair—Sum of all beauty that has ever been—And knows that in such glimpses one may seeRadiant reflections of reality.

The Tranquil Heart

TRANQUILLITY is a flower of faithThat blossoms when seeds are sownIn the trusting heart that seeketh good,And waiteth for God alone.

A Prayer

LET me, dear Father, of Thy love so sing,That I may bringA strain of melody to some sad heart,There to impartA priceless boon, whereby shall gladness springTo blossoming;E'en though I walk apart, from need or choice,Let me rejoiceWith such unfaltering trust, that they who hearShall know Thee nearerAnd hold Thee dearer,Forgetting all save Thee, in faith sincere.

Teach Me, I Pray

HELP me, O God,To loose these boys and girls in my own thoughtAnd let them go.

Love Divine—A Hymn
