Poems

Demonstration

When faith is at its ebb tide,When hope falls faint and sore,When sorrow walks beside me,Then I can pray the more; And I can let more goodnessMy every act express,Till faith and hope, reviving,Bring back my happiness.

Pray

Pray , frightened one, be calm, and know your fearFor that frail thing it is, and see it flee,As clouds before the sunshine disappear,To leave your heart at rest, from bondage free.

"No night there"

How can one fasten shadows here and there,Or think some idle fancy glimpsed at nightMay be a part of substance, real and fair,When not a trace is found in morning light?

The Gift of Song

From God, my Father, comes the gift of songThat uplifts faith and triumphs over wrong; From God, my fortress strong—from Love divine—In every place this gift of song is mine!Encompassed round about on every sideWith songs of sure deliverance I'll bide; With everlasting joy upon my headMy heart shall sing, with daily wisdom fed.

Then, and Now

I used to dread the early morning hour,When all the cares and duties of the dayAppeared ahead, like some relentless power,Filling my heart with sorrow and dismay.

Love Is Near

I shall not hesitate, for Love is near,And Love is greater than all else beside; He promises to cast out every fear,Restoring joy to me, if I confideMy all to Him, wherein I shall abideWith eyes that will behold, and ears that hear.

What do we give to them, these little onesWho come to us so trusting and so gay,Their eyes alight with that sweet childlikenessThe Master loved?

Guidance

No thought of mine shall fetter thee,Nor human will preventThy going forth where God will leadTo give thee sweet content.

A Cup of Cold Water

I thank my God that I can giveWith open hands and overflowing heart; That in my consciousness a living springOf Spirit rises constantlyTo meet my need, and so outpouringTo fill the cup of him who, sick and weary,To me shall come for aid.

The Great Exemplar

Did you but know the deep sublimityOf deathless hope amid the multitudeOf frenzied fears; the cloistered quietudeOf confidence like his who calmed the sea,Who shared the loaves and fish at Galilee,And bore with sanguine heart and fortitudeThe jeers of men, and then in solitudeThe bitter cup of drear Gethsemane—How fruitful life! How full each halcyon day,Did you but know the comfort and the cheerOf walking with the gentle Nazarene—Of breasting grief and woe along the wayAs free from hopelessness and dreadful fearAs he who walked to Golgotha serene!

Revelation

Out of the depths have I cried unto Thee,And Thou, in Thy compassion, Lord, hast heard;Through darkest clouds of earth's inharmonyThere shines the presence of Thy saving word.

Omnipotence of God

Midst dimming mist and seeming wrong,From out the tumult and the throng,The still, small voice comes clear:Be still, and know I AM is here.
