On the rock

When images of majestic rocks —such as Oregon’s towering Haystack Rock or the massive Rock of Gibraltar at the Iberian Peninsula’s southern gateway—come to mind, we instinctively have a sense of unwavering firmness.

Yet in the profound lexicon of Christian Science, the word rock transcends geology. Mary Baker Eddy illuminates its metaphysical meaning in the Glossary of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, the first part of which is “spiritual foundation; Truth” (p. 593).

Diligent study of the Bible and Mrs. Eddy’s writings reveals that the immutable rock, divine Truth, exposes illness, sin, and discord as illusions, false beliefs. Infinite Mind, God, expresses eternal health, harmony, and love—the perfection of His creation—as the only reality. Science and Health affirms, “God, Spirit, alone created all, and called it good” (p. 339).
