Safe in the ark of spiritual understanding

Safety is the spiritual consciousness that God is always present and active, wherever we are.

Years ago, I felt the need to dig deeper into understanding the safety that comes from God. That desire led me to take a closer look at the biblical accounts of Noah’s ark and the ark of the covenant. I began to notice how both relate to safety, refuge, promise, and God’s ever-present care for His children.

I discovered that the story of Noah’s ark (see Genesis 6–9) isn’t just about animals and a flood. I came to see it as symbolizing spiritual refuge and renewal and as showing how obedience to divine direction provides safety, even when the world around us seems chaotic. Noah, being “a just man and perfect in his generations” who “walked with God,” was obedient in every detail, trusting in what God told him to do. To me, he wasn’t just collecting animals; he was gathering ideas representing obedience, faith, and provision. And when the flood subsided, God established a covenant with Noah, and the rainbow became the symbol of promise, marking a fresh understanding of God’s enduring love.

The ark of the covenant was a cherished repository related to the covenant God established with Moses and the Israelites at Mount Sinai. This chest contained the stone tablets with the Ten Commandments. According to later Jewish tradition, it also contained Aaron’s rod that had budded (confirming God’s appointment of Aaron as high priest) and a golden pot of manna. Together, these items seem to me to symbolize God’s law, guidance, and steadfast protection.
