Praying as Jesus taught
Readers of this magazine have seen the beautiful effects of praying as Jesus taught. They have written about the comfort, direction, and healing they have received. For almost 130 years, this magazine has published testimonies by individuals who have been healed of disease and sin through their own prayers and the prayers of others. More importantly, many of us have a deep yearning to learn to pray more effectively—to be better healers, to bless our family, friends, and individuals all around the world, and to glorify God.
This yearning turns us to the best authority on prayer—Christ Jesus. His unparalleled record of healing inspires us to learn how to pray as he prayed. In his wonderful Sermon on the Mount, he taught his followers, including those of us today, how to pray effectively.
Jesus said, “When thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly” (Matthew 6:6). This closet is not a physical place, but a turning to God, the Father of all, with all our heart. It can take place anywhere and can be for a moment or for hours as we deepen our consecration. When thought has turned to God, we’re in that closet. We are now listening for how God is instructing and guiding us and for what He is revealing to us about ourselves and others.
