Never too late for freedom from guilt
Spiritual man, made in God’s image, has never fallen from grace.
Guilt is one of the heaviest emotions the human heart can carry. It whispers that what’s past cannot be repaired, that we’ve failed someone or something beyond forgiveness. And many of us have felt this weight at one time or another. Yet Christian Science reveals that guilt, like all forms of suffering, has no divine authority, because God, divine Love, never created a past that must be relived or a mistake that cannot be redeemed.
Recently, someone shared that they were burdened by intense guilt over feeling they had not done enough for a family member who had since passed on. They longed to find peace but felt trapped by regret, believing there was no way to make things right. Later, as I prayed about the conversation, it became clearer to me that true healing never comes from retracing human history but only from understanding the spiritual fact of man’s innocence, resulting from his ever-present connection to God.
The Bible assures us that God is pure, unchanging Love, and that His creation is the expression of Love. It also implies that God is All-in-all; therefore, nothing can exist outside of divine goodness. In this light, a nagging sense that maybe we haven’t done enough can be dissolved by a recognition of God’s all-embracing goodness constantly uplifting all. In more severe cases, guilt can be a wake-up call to stop wrongdoing or to step up right action. In either case, a mistaken view of ourselves—a false sense that we have been separated from God and are outside of His grace—can be replaced with a fuller understanding that God made us wholly good, and we can live out from that basis. Christ Jesus came not to condemn us for a history of shortcomings and moral failings but to reveal our God-given freedom, innocence, and unbroken relationship to divine Love.
