Life that is never lost
Nothing can, ever has, or ever will separate any of us from the love of God or the presence of the Christ.
I felt great sadness when I heard the news of a dear friend’s passing. It came close on the heels of the passing of two other close friends and the loss of a much-loved relative a year before that. The shock, sadness, and disbelief were quickly followed by gratitude for the lives of these loved ones. I felt a surge of love and appreciation for the many shared times and valued conversations. This was a comfort to me and helped me when thinking about the world’s challenges.
So many questions come to mind as I think of those facing tragedy around the world: How can I pray about this situation? Is it possible to lose Life, God? To lose good? Is man, who is the beloved child of God, vulnerable and at the mercy of an evil power named disease, lack, war, and so on? Where do we begin in trying to help?
The Bible is where I usually start when needing answers. Saint Paul gives a helpful answer in his letter to early Christians in Rome. He writes: “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? . . . In all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:35, 37–39).
