Career uncertainty overcome

“Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there” (Psalms 139:7, 8).

Sometimes we might feel as though we’re in the depths of despair, not praying or thinking about God but worrying about a situation. This happened to me a few years ago. My previous position at work was being eliminated because of budget cuts. I wasn’t doing that job at the time because I was on a temporary assignment (a secondment) in another part of the corporation. And I was struggling. I’d been given an assignment as a radio presenter in charge of business programs. The hours were long, the team inexperienced, and the pressures of the job—including tight deadlines—were making me doubt my competence.

At school many years earlier, I had been told that I was dyslexic, that I would always have difficulty reading, and that I should change my career choice of journalism. This all came back to me as I struggled in this new role, along with the added stress related to the closing of my earlier job.
