I was looking for a religion that heals
I grew up in Le Havre, France. My mother was sick for a long time, and when she passed on, her Bible was all that I had left of her. When I read it, I was comforted by the stories of Christ Jesus’ healing ministry. I felt inspired by the guidance from this master Christian teacher.
Later in life, my profession as a fashion designer took me to Paris, where I also performed as an actress as a hobby. But I never forgot those beautiful healings described in the Bible.
I was looking for a religion that heals as Jesus did. On my way to work one day, I went to the doorstep of a church, thinking that I might find the answers I was seeking there, but stopped. I heard very clearly in my head, “No.” In my heart, I knew that I wouldn’t find answers there and needed to keep searching.
Then one day, I went to the theater to watch the rehearsal of a play for which I was an understudy for one of the roles. I sat down near a woman, who turned to me and said, “I thought you were in the play?” I responded that I was not in the regular cast. She paused and said, “With God all things are possible” (Matthew 19:26).
While I didn’t have a role in the play, this dear woman offered me something more valuable. After sharing more biblical statements with me, she invited me to attend a Wednesday testimony meeting at a local branch Church of Christ, Scientist. On Wednesday of that week, I considered going, but I had only one Metro ticket left and would need two to get to the church and then back home after the service. Thankfully, though, my desire to attend the service was stronger than my fear of not being able to get home. So I went, thinking, “God will provide a way for me to go home.”
Without giving it another thought, I went to the woman’s church and realized that I had finally found a religion that heals as Jesus did. After the service, I walked out of the auditorium and stopped in the hall. As I stood still, I silently asked God, “What now, Father?” The answer came: “Look at your feet.” I looked down, and on the ground beside my right foot was a Metro ticket that would be enough for me to get home. What a loving Father we have!
The Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, tells us, “Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need” (Mary Baker Eddy, p. 494). I certainly felt that my need was met—not just for transportation that evening but also for a physical healing that I experienced not long after.
I used to cough heavily every winter, but once I began reading Science and Health, the seasonal coughing disappeared. I didn’t pray specifically about the condition, but I knew that the truths in the textbook had healed me. That left an impression that I still feel today.
As I continued attending services at that church, I became acquainted with a man who later became my husband. I am so very grateful to have been introduced to a religion that heals, answering every human need.
