Filled up or fulfilled?

Many today struggle with feelings of futility and emptiness. This restlessness is indicative of a deep, spiritual hunger.

There was a time years ago when I felt spiritually empty. I had everything going for me—health, a successful business, companionship, family, travel, etc. Yet I felt that emptiness. It was heartbreaking because I didn’t know what to do about the darkness that haunted me or even why it was there. Then my health failed, and I became critically ill. My business closed, my boyfriend moved on, and I was left alone and desolate.

At that point, I turned back to the teachings of Christian Science that I had been brought up with. I contacted a Christian Science practitioner and asked him to pray for me. The first thing he told me was, “You don’t need to be filled up, because you are fulfilled.” This gave me pause and made me contemplate the deep spiritual hunger I was feeling.

As I committed to daily study of the Bible and the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, and devoted time to prayer, a quiet comfort and peace began to settle in me. Although the healing didn’t come quickly, it did come steadily. God’s truth and love poured in, until one day as I was standing on a hill, I found myself feeling both God’s overflowing love for me and my love for God, and I knew I was healed. It felt as though I’d just woken up! The restlessness and emptiness were gone, and I felt spiritually regenerated and fulfilled, even though my circumstances hadn’t changed. The grace of God, Spirit, now filled me with a sense of worth, and I felt that this was a result of the practitioner’s prayers.
