God the Only Cause and Creator

O Lord God, thou hast only begun to show thy servant thy greatness and thy mighty hand; for what god is there in heaven or on earth who can do such works and mighty acts as thine?

—Revised Standard Version®

Moses is speaking here, recalling his prayer during the Exodus from Egypt. The Hebrew leader’s rhetorical question affirms the omnipotence of the one God, using the emphatic combination of Lord (Hebrew, a dōnāy) and God’s name (yahweh). While recognizing no other God, Jewish Scripture often compares the one God to pagan gods, citing His supremacy (see, for instance, Exodus 15:11; Psalms 86:8; 89:6).
