Forgiveness is natural

It’s a misconception to believe that any of us could lose our innate ability to express God, good, through forgiveness.

We all have the ability to forgive. It may happen quickly, or it may take some practice, but thankfully, our Master, Christ Jesus, showed us the way. Not only did Jesus not hold a grudge toward those who were trying to destroy his ministry and take his life, but while on the cross he declared, “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do” (Luke 23:34). It might seem far-fetched to think that we can fully emulate Jesus, but we can get to a point where forgiveness feels like less of an obligation and more of an inspiring experience.

While I have long known that forgiveness of those who have committed wrongs and injustices against us is attainable, this ability seemed to be at the bottom of my list of strengths and virtues. Sometimes it seems as if society is trying to deny our true identity as a child of God by telling us that we’re more than justified in striking back or holding a grudge. But this doesn’t truly bring progress. I’m grateful for a recent experience that showed just how much I’ve grown spiritually when it comes to forgiving. And I know that the same growth is possible for each and every one
of us.

I remember feeling an all-absorbing peace and a certainty that healing was already taking place.
