Doctrine of Atonement

I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; . . . Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are. . . . And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth.

Just before the events leading to his crucifixion, Christ Jesus moves from instructing and comforting his disciples to praying directly to God. “By positioning Jesus’s last words as a prayer,” writes a scholar, “the Fourth Evangelist makes it possible for all generations of believers to hear and experience the love that Jesus and God have for them. . . . This prayer points the faith community toward a future . . . in which the experience of God’s love for them is realized.”
