I was hauling a heavy box of shelves that I’d been storing when the old cardboard suddenly gave way, and the shelves slammed down on my toes, which were covered only by socks.
Pain made me scream so loudly that neighbors two stories down ran to the stairwell calling, “What happened?”
“I’m fine,” I said. “It’s OK.”
