Child’s bed-wetting stops
“I’ve tried everything!” our daughter told me, frustrated that none of the approaches she was using to deal with my granddaughter’s nightly bed-wetting had been effective. I responded, “Have you tried praying about this?”
I was confident that Christian Science could heal the problem, and I began praying for guidance. A hymn by Samuel Longfellow reminds us of God’s ever-present care, beginning, “I look to Thee in every need, / And never look in vain” (Christian Science Hymnal, No. 134). Every need! I was confident that this need, too, could be met.
I gave prayerful consideration to the word control, and was reminded of this statement in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy: “Neither organic inaction nor overaction is beyond God’s control; . . .” (p. 125). I also thought about another hymn that mentions (referring to God as divine Love) “Love’s sweet control” (Margaret Glenn Matters, Hymnal, No. 221, © CSBD).
It came to me to suggest that our daughter pray with our grandchild before bedtime, and I offered to support those prayers. Since our granddaughter is familiar with some of Mrs. Eddy’s hymns, I shared with her some ideas based on Hymn 304, from a poem titled “ ‘Feed my sheep’ ”:
“Shepherd, show me how to go”—how to go to the bathroom at night, waking up in time not to wet the bed.
“I will listen for Thy voice”—God, I will listen, and I know you’ll tell me when I need to wake up.
“I will follow and rejoice”—I thank you in advance, God, for helping me stay dry at night.
“So, when day grows dark”—I am still in Your arms, dear God.
“Till the morning’s beam”—when we can rejoice together.
“Shepherd, wash them clean”—rather than Mom having to endlessly wash sheets!
I also reminded our granddaughter to thank God before she went to bed as well as each morning when she woke up. There was immediate improvement, and within two weeks the bed-wetting stopped completely. She has continued to demonstrate “Love’s sweet control” for over a year.

The testimony is about my child. I was very pregnant with my third child and really wanted both of my younger children to be fully potty-trained before I had the baby. The bed-wetting added to my concern; it was also challenging to keep changing sheets on a top bunk when I had a huge belly! I went from feeling very discouraged and alarmed by reading about long-term bed-wetting challenges to having the issue resolved in two weeks.
