God’s forever promise: I am with you
Newly widowed with two teenaged children, she was a homemaker who hadn’t been in the business world for decades. Without her husband’s income, she was afraid she would not be able to provide for her family. But my mom was a woman with a great love for God, and an even greater trust in Him. She had underlined these words in her well-used Bible: “Thy Maker is thine husband.” The whole passage reads: “Fear not; for thou shalt not be ashamed: neither be thou confounded; for thou shalt not be put to shame: for thou shalt forget the shame of thy youth, and shalt not remember the reproach of thy widowhood any more. For thy Maker is thine husband; the Lord of hosts is his name; and thy Redeemer the Holy One of Israel; The God of the whole earth shall he be called” (Isaiah 54:4, 5).
These words are not just for widows! They are for all of us, married or not. The spiritual truth is that even when we feel alone or are in dire circumstances, God, in His complete and total love for man, is husbanding each one of us. And opening our heart to understand this relationship can meet our needs in practical ways. God, unwavering Love, consoles, cares and provides for, shelters, embraces, encourages, supports, and strengthens His children. Becoming aware of this dispels the concerns and worries that would appear to stymie or stifle our true, spiritual being.
The Bible states, “Neither death, nor life, . . . nor things present, nor things to come, . . . shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:38, 39). No situation can come between us and God’s love for us. We live surrounded and empowered by His great love.
