Finding God’s presence through sport
While in high school in the north of England, I was very keen on long jumping. One year, some family difficulties prevented me from going to practice as normal, so I talked with my mother to get a better spiritual sense of what I was really doing when I was jumping, and why I didn’t have to worry about missing practice.
We considered that my motive for jumping shouldn’t be to perform well for myself or to do better than others for my own satisfaction. It was an opportunity to learn more about God’s power and presence by expressing God’s spiritual qualities.
Mary Baker Eddy, who discovered Christian Science, found through her Bible study, and used throughout her writings, a number of synonyms for God. They appear in the definition of God in her book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures: “Principle; Mind; Soul; Spirit; Life; Truth; Love” (p. 587).
