Standing up to sickness

One Sunday, after a morning in Christian Science Sunday School, my daughter and her friend came with me for some food and bowling. The friend, who had never attended a Christian Science Sunday School class before, showed me a list she had made of some of the laws of God from a fun presentation on Christian Science the girls’ Sunday School teacher had prepared. One law was that understanding God, Spirit, leads to healing—always has, always will. Another was that obedience to God brings out harmony in our lives.

But that night, as I prepared for bed, I felt sickness coming on. After such a happy day, this seemed totally unfair! I went to my bedroom and shut the door. Then I said to myself, “No! This is not right, and it’s not true!” A thought came to me: My daughter’s friend had taken a sip from my cup during lunch. Was some kind of sickness transferred? I began insisting that there could be no movement of anything harmful between God’s children. As the likeness of the all-good God, the only thing either of us could share was the goodness of a wonderfully good God.
