Knowing God as “Father-Mother” heals

In Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy gives the spiritual sense of the Lord’s Prayer. The first words, “Our Father which art in heaven,” are explained as “Our Father-Mother God, all-harmonious” (p. 16). Several years ago, while I was a student in a Christian Science nurses training program, I gained a deeper appreciation of God as Father-Mother when my grade-school-age son had a beautiful healing.

During my training, my son and I were living on the premises of the Christian Science nursing facility in close proximity to Christian Science nurses and staff members. One morning as I was getting ready to go to work, I found that my son was feverish and had all the symptoms of a cold. As a single parent, I felt I needed to be the one to stay with him to care for him, but I knew it would not be possible to find a replacement for me at work at the last moment. However, next door, right on the other side of the wall, was a fellow staff member who was familiar to my son and me and who kindly agreed to be available.

I got my son settled with everything he needed and went off to work, but with a heavy heart. After caring for each patient, I would return to the Christian Science nurse’s station and pace the floor, praying for my son. Soon, the Christian Science nursing supervisor (who was also an experienced mother and grandmother) stopped me and, getting my full attention, lovingly looked me in the eye and said, “You know, you ought to let his Mother take care of him.” That was one of those “aha” moments when it became so clear to me that God was my son’s real Mother.
