Psalm 91: A promise of safety

An online search for Bible commentary on Psalm 91 showed this beloved psalm at the top of search results explicitly addressing the coronavirus. Titles included: “What does Psalm 91 really say about the coronavirus?” and “How Psalm 91 speaks to your coronavirus fears.” It’s wonderful to know that many people find comfort by turning to the Bible in times of trouble and cherish this psalm as a prayer of petition and hope.

As a Christian Scientist, I love Psalm 91 as an affirmation and description of what is already true. Through Christian Science, which was revealed to and explained by Mary Baker Eddy, we gain a deeper, more practical understanding that we are living our eternal life now. God’s promises are kept now. We dwell in His kingdom now. And we are loved and safe and calm now, as we rest in His power and presence.

I cherish a valuable lesson I learned about how our understanding of the simplest spiritual truth inevitably blesses not only us but others as well. When my husband and I were planning a trip to the Costa Rican rainforests, he decided to take antimalarial medication, since malaria is considered a risk in that part of the country. I wanted to rely on God’s protecting power and turned to Him for guidance.
