Northern lights and spiritual heights

One winter evening when I was a child, and was very disheartened and discouraged, Momma lovingly took me aside and said, “God’s love is right here, all around. Tonight, just trust God and look up. He will show you something very special.” These words changed my life. Let me explain.

As a child, for a time I felt separated from the joy our family always shared when the aurora borealis (the northern lights) was dancing in the wintery night sky above my home in Alaska. No matter how precise my family was in pointing out the exact location of the lights or describing exactly what they looked like, all I saw was a dark sky with spots of light from the stars—never the whole, dynamic picture.

So with hope, and trusting Momma’s words, I turned to God, divine Love, with my whole heart, not knowing what I would see. My eyes lifted that night, and what I saw will never, ever be erased from my memory. The dancing rainbow of lights was more glorious than I could ever have imagined! Right then I learned such an important lesson, symbolized by those beautiful lights: God’s presence and bright goodness and love are with us. And even if I think I can’t see something at first, I can still trust my Father-Mother God to stay right by my side and show me the way until I can see.
