To maintain proper self-government
No one wants to lose control over themselves. But to maintain proper self-government, individuals need to be sure they don’t give in to any influence that would take away their individual integrity, health, or well-being. Turning to God for guidance is the best place to start.
Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, writes, “Man is properly self-governed only when he is guided rightly and governed by his Maker, divine Truth and Love” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 106). So it’s necessary to listen for and follow God’s directing and to recognize God’s all-harmonious government as the only legitimate governing law.
We can sometimes be misled into believing we are vulnerable to discord in its many guises, such as financial limitation, accident, or loss of health. But the fact is that any appearance of discord claiming the possibility of a power other than God, good, is false.
