‘Her words were like a balm to me’

One day many years ago, I was sitting in the waiting room of a clinic when a very dear friend approached me and warmly greeted me. We had known each other since childhood, but in later years had moved away and no longer saw each other. My friend owned an employment agency, and she had come to see one of the doctors who needed an employee. I was very happy to see her, and when she asked me how I was, I said, “Not well.” I was at the clinic for medical treatment for my two youngest children (six and eleven years old). I felt sad and distressed, and was very fearful for my children’s health. I also suffered from frequent migraine headaches, despite taking many different types of painkillers.

While my friend and I waited, she told me she was studying something very interesting—Christian Science. She said it had healed her completely of chronic bronchitis, from which she had always suffered. I asked her where I could start studying Christian Science. She told me it is studied from two books: the Bible, and the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. And my friend kindly offered to arrange a meeting for me with the lady who was helping her understand Christian Science and had prayed with her for healing.

When I met and talked with this sweet woman, it was as though my thought had been illumined. At the time I was involved in a religion that viewed God as punishing and unforgiving. I told her I was afraid of ever offending such an unloving God and being punished. She assured me very lovingly that there was only one God, who is all-loving. He embraced the whole universe with love. We spent the whole afternoon together talking, and it did me a lot of good. Her words were like a balm to me. I left her home feeling full of joy.
