Heart-to-heart sharing of religious beliefs

I’ve been touched and enriched by the Netflix series The Story of God with Morgan Freeman. In it Mr. Freeman travels the world, exploring the beliefs and practices of prominent and little-known religions. What has impressed me most is the mutual, heart-to-heart warmth and caring that passes between Mr. Freeman and those who openly share their religious beliefs and practices with him. An enriching learning experience for all!

I’m reminded of an experience I had some years ago when I was a member of the Christian Science Board of Lectureship. It illustrates something Mary Baker Eddy once wrote: “When the heart speaks, however simple the words, its language is always acceptable to those who have hearts” (Miscellaneous Writings 1883–1896, p. 262).

A branch Church of Christ, Scientist, with just a handful of members invited me to give a lecture in their community. This church hadn’t sponsored a lecture on Christian Science for several years, but they felt newly inspired to provide one for the people in their community—and to love them enough to do it.
