Healing of Ménière’s disease

There’s a promise in Moses’ blessing recorded in chapter 33 of the Bible’s book of Deuteronomy: “The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms” (verse 27). I have often found comfort in this, especially during the hundreds of thousands of miles of air travel I’ve done during my career.

About five years ago, I began to experience periodic attacks of vertigo, which would occur suddenly and without warning and were quite severe. At the time, it seemed best to see a doctor about it, who diagnosed the condition as Ménière’s disease. Following the diagnosis, it seemed right to take the pills offered. But when they didn’t have any effect, I stopped using them and focused exclusively on prayer in Christian Science. It didn’t occur to me that this problem could not be healed through Christian Science treatment. I had experienced the healing power of Christian Science on other occasions.

At one point, my wife and I took an extended trip to Australia, Tasmania, and Japan. On our way to the Melbourne airport, I became increasingly ill with the frightening vertigo. It was a great struggle to mentally hold to spiritual truth, but I was encouraged by this idea in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy: “... Love supports the struggling heart until it ceases to sigh over the world and begins to unfold its wings for heaven” (p. 57).
