‘Tennis elbow’ healed
I loved racquetball and played four or five times per week. I was competitive and had a strong desire to win. However, over some time my elbow became very sore and painful and my entire arm was severely weakened. As a result, it was painful to play and difficult to be competitive. My friends in the locker room had lots of advice, often contradictory.
After a while, I realized that I was treating what appeared to be “tennis elbow” as strictly a physical problem. As a student of the Bible and the teachings of Christian Science, I knew that what appears to be physical isn’t the reality, and I looked to see beyond physicality to the spiritual reality. Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer of Christian Science, explains it this way in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures: “Metaphysics resolves things into thoughts, and exchanges the objects of sense for the ideas of Soul.
“These ideas are perfectly real and tangible to spiritual consciousness, and they have this advantage over the objects and thoughts of material sense,—they are good and eternal” (p. 269).
