How I prayed during a hurricane
“The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much,” the Bible assures us (James 5:16).
I took this promise to heart when I saw hurricane warnings from the National Weather Service for the Hawaiian Islands the day after I arrived on Kauai. It was August 2018, and Hurricane Lane was headed our way. Many people were praying for the safety of those on the islands.
Watching from our condo as the high surf pounded and sprayed against the lava bluffs, I thought about Mary Baker Eddy’s poem “Christ My Refuge.” Especially inspiring were these two verses:
