The glorious adventure of understanding God
The Bible is full of accounts in which individuals apprehend God and His supremacy with great spiritual perception. One such account can be found in the first chapter of Luke in what some Bible scholars refer to as Mary’s Song. This beautiful and poetic jubilation of praise to God by the Virgin Mary shows her familiarity with the Scriptures and her profound spiritual sense. It reads:
“My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name. And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation. He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree. He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away. He hath holpen his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy; as he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for ever” (verses 46–55).
The word magnify is rich with meaning. Noah Webster’s American Dictionary of the English Language defines it as “to make great or greater” or “to make great in representation; to extol; to exalt in description or praise.” The theme of magnifying God runs throughout the Bible, but the possibility of experiencing a magnified, more inspired sense of God isn’t reserved just for biblical times. Gaining a higher understanding of God’s all-embracing goodness is possible today because of our inherent spiritual sense. This fresh sense of God reveals to us in prayer that God’s goodness is all that is truly real. Through spiritual sense, our love for God is magnified; so, too, is our understanding of God, as His nature and supremacy become larger to our comprehension.
